The team huddles as captain Angelina Vargas ‘23 shares some words of wisdom.
From beating Middlesex 7-0 to losing 4-3 against JFK in overtime, this year’s girls’ soccer season has been a whirlwind of ups and downs.
The season ended with this week’s 3-1 loss to Bishop Eustace in the state sectional quarterfinals. Co-captain Jasmyn Gordon ‘23 remembers the season fondly.
“I think we’ve grown a lot as a team since the beginning of the season and I’m very proud of all of our players. This will be my last year playing soccer since I decided to not play in college, and I couldn’t be more satisfied with how this season is coming to an end. I know that everyone on the team has been working towards improvement, and I’m confident that our upcoming juniors and seniors are ready to take on leadership roles and lead the team into the next season.”
The seniors this year have guided the team, especially the underclassmen. Jasmyn was joined by fellow seniors Angelina Vargas ‘23, Briana Di Landro ‘23, Sydney Racine ‘23 and Loveleen Sindhar ‘23 as team leaders. Angelina led the Rams in scoring with 30 goals. Freshman Taylor Green ‘26 was second in scoring with 17 goals and sophomore Emma Herko ‘25 led the team with 15 assists.
The W+H team has had some great moments including beating Old Bridge, (a team two divisions above theirs) 2-1 in the signature victory of the season. Old Bridge came in expecting to dominate the Rams, but the W+H girls refused to give up. The persistent team pushed as hard as they could, left everything out on the field, and, in the end, came out with the win.
With a final record of 10-4-1, the team can safely say they have done what they wanted to do with their time on the field and made the most of their season. The five seniors of the team have assisted the underclassmen with both their playing style and their playing mindset.
Angelina spoke of her predictions of the team after the seniors will graduate: “Even though the team will lose five seniors next year, there is so much potential that I do not think it will affect the team too much. It will push our older and younger players on the team to step up as leaders and guide the incoming freshmen. It is so rewarding to see how much the girls on the team have grown in just one year, which makes me hopeful that they will give teams a hard time next year. The sky is the limit for this team and as long as the girls are having fun and growing as players and people. In the end the loss of five seniors will not be detrimental.”
