Senior co-captain Kapriana Payami ‘23 prepares to smack a forehand shot.
The undefeated W+H Girls’ Tennis Team looks to continue its divisional dominance in the Greater Middlesex Conference (GMC) as they eye Blue division gold with a 6-0 season record. With the exception of 2020 where the title was unofficial due to COVID modifications, the team has been the undefeated champion in the White Division since tying with Highland Park for Blue Division title in 2019. This season’s move back up to face higher level Blue opponents has thus far not interrupted their efforts to sweep competition, with a roster led by veteran head coach Ron Haynes featuring highly experienced athletes from all four Upper School grades.
The Rams have not only been winning, but have been doing so within a comfortable margin, with only one nail-biting match against JFK-Iselin in which the opposing school won more than one set. The rest of their record is filled with 5-0 wins and one 4-1 triumph. Senior first singles player Kapriana Payami ‘23 has not lost a match in divisional play.
Team spirit and satisfaction with performance have also been high with team captain and second singles player Naischa Puri ’23 remarking: “The team is there for each other, always motivating and encouraging and, as a captain and teammate, it’s really nice to see.”
In spite of being heavily favored to once again sweep the division, there are no plans within the team to cruise to victory. The athletes are not taking anything for granted, maintaining a level of intensity and drive as they power through the remainder of the season towards the championship title.
“We’ve really stepped up and are constantly working hard and supporting one another. Focus and teamwork are key,” Naischa said.
