The soccer team stands together in a huddle after another successful addition to the season’s record.
Building on last year’s successful season, the varsity boys’ soccer team is off to a winning start with a record of 7-2 and an impressive string of recent wins. On Friday, September 30, the Rams defeated East Brunswick Vo-Tech 6-1, making it their second victory over the team after previously beating them 6-2. Friday’s score was tied at 1-1 after the first half, but the Rams dominated the second half with constant offensive pressure and five exciting goals. Three goals were scored by Amandeep Bahia ‘24, while freshman Sevastian Castillo’ 26, along with sophomores Thomas O’Connor ’25 and Al-Hammed Bell’25 added one goal each.
Team manager Maiti O’Connor ‘23 took note of the team’s exceptional defense: “Our main goalie, sophomore Cian Nicholls ‘25, has averaged nine saves a game,” she said. “The whole team has been working hard all season, being on time to practice and eager to play.”
In addition to their impressive performance on the field, the team has been experiencing high morale and team spirit. Nicholls observed: “It’s a great atmosphere to be around. It’s just a great environment, positive all the time. This season, we’ve been doing great so far. We were undefeated in the division until we played Middlesex, so we’ve just gotta beat them at home and we’ve got a good spot for the division and the states.”
The veterans on the team have been generously helping the underclassmen feel welcomed and a part of the family. Freshman Sevastian Castillo shared, “My teammates have been inspiring to play with, and they are helpful in guiding me to be the best player I can be.” Along with Castillo, freshmen Luis Perez ’26 and Justin Lustgarten ’26 have also showcased their skills in practices and games, with a combined five goals between them.
This year, the Rams have 11 seniors on the team, three of whom are captains - Matthew Faust ‘23, Aiden Lee ‘23, and Gyrord Gregoire ‘23. Junior Amandeep Bahia serves as the team’s fourth captain and feels optimistic about the team’s chances of success.
“We’ve made a lot of improvement this year, everyone’s been working out in the offseason,” he said, “We’re very hard-working, disciplined, very motivated, and we’re ready to win the Gold Division.”
