On April 13, 2023, the Hispanic Latinx Affinity Group traveled to New York City to visit El Museo del Barrio, New York’s leading Latino cultural institution. Its mission is to “present and preserve the art and culture of Puerto Ricans and all Latin Americans in the United States.”
“El museo” translates to the museum. The word “barrio” translates to the neighborhood, while the phrase “el barrio” means the place where many Hispanics, mainly from Puerto Rico, immigrated to. The HLA affinity group went on an outdoor tour of the real barrio of New York. They also got lunch to go and ate at a park.
Savanna Lopez ‘25 shared, “My favorite part of the trip was getting tacos from an authentic Hispanic restaurant for lunch.” The trip was also used as a bonding experience between the members. They spent an entire day in the city and were exposed to Hispanic art and culture.
“It was really fulfilling to see our culture represented in the real world and learn about a piece of our history together as a small family of Wardlaw+Hartridge,” Giselle Rodriguez '25 said.
